In London this morning I met two Dutch lawyers who are representing the families of those men and boys massacred by the Bosnian Serb Army at Srebrenica in Eastern Bosnia in July 1995. During March 1993, working for the United Nations, it was British soldiers under my command who first penetrated to Srebrenica. Whilst we were there the area around the town was declared a United Nations 'Safe Haven'. My soldiers and I handed over to Canadian soldiers when we were ordered out of the place in April 1993. Subsequently the Canadians handed over to a Dutch Infantry Battalion and it was during their tenure that Srebrenica was overun by the Bosnian Serb Army. They then murdered over 8.000 men and boys in cold blood. My meeting today was to explain how the Srebrenica Safe Haven was established more than 2 years before the genocide of July 1995. I was also asked about United Nations Orders for Opening Fire as well as Command and Control arrangements.
In the afternoon Tony Power, Beckenham Conservative Party Agent and I formally registered my candidacy as the Conservative Candidate for the Beckenham Constituency at Electoral Services in the Civic Centre of Bromley Council. The photograph above shows Tony and I about to enter the Electoral Services offices.
I now look forward to watching the party leaders' debate on television tonight.
