Personally I am not a fan of television debates between party leaders and most certainly one that involved seven people. By their nature such debates must be superficial and they will never allow enough time for people to reply to cheap shots thrown at them from people who have everything to gain and nothing to lose. Thus my expectations of what would happen during the so-called ‘Leader’s Debate’ last Thursday evening were not great.
Of course all other parties called for less austerity; it’s one of those cheap shots. David Cameron was quite right to hurl back that they irresponsibly failed utterly to declare how they would even start to pay for their aspirations. The only way they could do that would be by more taxation and greater debts placed on our children.
Given the constraints of superficiality and everyone being treated equally in time terms, David Cameron clearly demonstrated by his sound common sense and judgement just why he should remain as Prime Minister. I didn’t expect less.
It is Easter Saturday and my team and I are not actively campaigning on the streets in Beckenham over the Holy Weekend. However Croydon Central is a crucial marginal seat for the Conservatives to win and so Robert Straker, Deputy Chairman Political of the Beckenham Conservative Party, and I went to help in the key marginal seat of Croydon Central today.
Firstly Robert and I met for breakfast with other friends in the Moonlight Café on Croydon Road and then we drove over to help Gavin Barwell, our candidate for Croydon Central. With Gavin and his team we canvassed around King Henry’s Drive in New Addington. The above photograph was taken with party members when we were doing that.
